The development of exchanges fostered by ESTER is made up of four main poles:

• Industrial ceramics : Limoges is the leading ceramics pole in France. The development of new technologies asks for the perfecting of new materials and processes, ceramics being a major one, with applications in electronics, aerospace, medicine…
  
• Electromagnetism : high-frequency electronics and optics involve industry, research, and technology transfer. Today ESTER is giving birth to future technologies in transport and telecommunications.
  
• Genetics for the agro- and bio-industries : this biotechnology pole offers renowned skills in genetics, cell and molecular biology, in vitro cultures, with applications in agribusiness, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
  
• Water and Environment (Wastewater Treatment – Pollution Management – Environment Technologies): this pole is a powerful training and research tool developing analyses, new processes, and regulations, as well as coordinating international cooperation.
